EAA Chapter 1423

February 16, 2008 Meeting Minutes

George Tamvakis called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM. George introduced Dick Ballser and Allen and Beth Clark as new attendees and then dispensed with the usual official business in order to expedite the presentation by Steve Pearce, who had a flight to catch to Argentina. George introduced Mr. Pearce, who started his presentation.

No, that's not a funny hat-- it's Rabon's gift of an airplane toy that happened to be perfectly aligned with Steve's head!

Steve Pearce gave a fascinating account of meeting Gus McLeod and the subsequent trip to the north pole. He described the challenges of flying his Cessna 182 over the vast expanses of Nunavut (formerly part of the Northwest Territories) in marginal weather and icing before introducing the National Geographic documentary of the trip. Steve also showed us some of the gear he used on his adventure and talked about the special accommodations necessary for operating aircraft in extremely cold temperatures. The audio visual equipment seemed to work pretty well despite some initial difficulties.

After a question and answer session, Mr. Pearce left to catch his flight and the meeting was adjourned.

Lunch was delicious chili provided by Eddie and Janet Williams. Thanks!
